Thursday afternoon we arrived at Brest, a town that has had relations
with Constanta for 10 years. Brest is situated in Finistere. The
sixth morning in Bretagne will start with a visit to Oceanopolis,
the biggest European Park of the ocean. If we had a day only for
Oceanopolis we could have been able to see all the three sections
(polar, temperate and tropical) but as we had only few hours we
decided to see the tropical section.
Inside the building, was interesting, exotic and educational. It
was very impressive how they presented the tropical fish, sharks,
and other sea life. They had an enormous multimedia presentation
on big screens and computers that made us feel like we were in the
Pacific, Indian, and Caribbean Sea. We could also see huge posters,
which were talking about the man's destruction of the environment.
At the end of the tropical section was a real miniature topical
forest. We left Oceanopolis regretfully because we couldn't see
it all. We had to meet with Arlene Roudant, an old friend of Romania
who is helping at the cultural and educational exchange between
the two countries. Brest was a German submarine base in the Second
World War was almost entirely destroyed.
The fishing industry is not as developed as it was few years ago.
Now truism has developed much more. The marine arsenal from Brest
was created in1631, and the Tanguy tower tells about the military
past of the town. We had our lunch at the college cafeteria situated
in the Letteres University from Brest, a postmodernist construction.
After lunch, we went to Conquet. We arrived at a sun-shined beach
where the sun made us feel like we were in Paradise.
We were so happy because we had a wonderful weather all the day.
In front of us was the ocean. We could see The Ouessant Island,
not the best place to be when the weather is bad for the fishermen.
An old expression says, "he who sees the Ouessant sees his
blood." Every element of this landscape is beautiful; the blue
and clear sky with white-pink clouds, brown, green fields, churches
and a brown cathedral. On Notre Dame de Grace tower you could see
an amazing architectural style. The monument was dedicated to marines
killed in the Second World War.
We eventually had to leave because the dark was falling fast in
Bretagne. We soon arrived at Brest. There we wanted to buy some
gifts. We entered a Dialogue bookshop-a place for music and different
publications. A construction, which was 10 times bigger than the
famous Eminescu book shop in Constanta.
It had book in every topic. After such a day we deserved a great
dinner. Maryvonne Perron was waiting for us in Landeneau- a city
with 15,000 people situated 30 km from Brest. She and Marie-Helene
Mevel were in Constanta last fall for a week. They assisted the
Romanian teacher who teaches French in the Automn Universitty. We
listened to Giles Servat music while we were eating the great food
made by Pascal, Maryvonne's husband. Tigrette, the house cat, was
very funny too.
As we were talking about Romania, we found out that the time was
passing too fast. We were sad because the time spent with them was
too short. Tomorrow another destination, Rennes, and another host,
a friend of Romania, Renne Vancassel.
