National Library
of Medicine
The National Library of
Medicine provides its MEDLINE database of more than 11 million references
to articles published in 4300 biomedical journals on the World Wide
Web so that you can conduct your own research concerning medical topics.
Start at the home page of the National Library of Medicine, click on
"Health Information" at the top of the page, and then select
MEDLINE from the list of options. This will take you to a description
of web-based search tool -- PubMed, with links to each search page.
The MEDLINE database
is used to find references to journal articles on a specific medical
topic. MEDLINE includes abstracts if published but does not contain
the full text of the articles. In addition to the bibliographic citations
with abstracts, the PubMed system has links to some publishers' Internet
pages that provide full texts of the articles. Note most publishers
charge a fee for obtaining the full text of an article and not all publishers
have web sites. Med has online help.
You can use the following
Medical Subject Heading (MeSH) terms to search MEDLINE for references
on minority health, simply input in the the search window, any of these
words/group of words:
Minority Groups
Ethnic Groups OR a specific ethnic group such as Aborigines, Arabs,
Asian Americans, Blacks, Eskimos, Gypsies, Hispanic Americans, Mexican
Americans, Indians, Central American Indians, North American Indians,
South American Indians, Jews, Whites.
The subheading Ethnology
[sh] is also available to use with disease terms or other selected terms
for ethnic, cultural, anthropological, or racial aspects. Geographic
headings are used with the subheading to indicate the place of origin
of a group of people living outside their native land, e.g., New York
City Cubans = CUBA/ethnology.
NLM's

Resource
Centers for Minority Aging Research
The National
Institutes of Health, National Institute on Aging,
National Institute of Nursing
Research, and the Office of Research in Minority Health created a program
to decrease the minority/non-minority differential in health and its
social sequelae for older people by focusing research upon health promotion,
disease prevention, and disability prevention. To meet this long-range
goal, the Resource Centers for Minority Aging Research, or RCMARs, has
a research infrastructure built around four objectives:
· To establish a mechanism for mentoring researchers for careers in
research on the health of minority elders;
· To enhance diversity in the professional workforce conducting research
on the health of minority elders;
· To evaluate/develop measurement tools tailored to minority aging population
and;
· To develop and deploy strategies for recruiting and retaining older
minority group members in epidemiological, psychosocial, and/or biomedical
research.
