Taxonomic descriptions: D XII-XIII 21-24; A II 23-25; P 13-15; V I 3; Vertebrae 40-41 (Stojanov and all., 1963; Svetovidov, 1964). Body naked, laterally compressed. Snout short with protruding profile. Males with high crest on dorsal part of the head. Colour: basic coloration yellow-greenish; vertical bright bars and specks on the body. Size: to 13 cm.

Distribution: Mediterranean, Black Sea and Atlantic coast, from Morocco to mouth of Loirs, France (Zander, 1986) in Bulgaria: comparatively rare along entire coast.
Habitats type, Critical habitats, Limiting factors: Shoal, pelagic, euryhaline, essentially in brackish waters; breach of the hydro - chemical regime.
Biology: Reproduction: May-July. Males guard eggs between stones. Food: benthic invertebrates, molluscs, algae.
Population trends: Declining.
Threats: Breach of the hydro-chemical regime.
