Taxonomic descriptions: The genus is widely distributed in Africa and Southern Asia. This is one of its two members known in the Black Sea region. Population size is critically low and barely reaches 20 pairs on the entire sea coast of Ukraine.

Distribution:

Habitats type, Critical habitats, Limiting factors: Habitats do not differ from those of Glareola pratincola, but are drier, preferably dry salinas and half-arid sites.

Biology: Breeding species, migrations are non-detectable owing to extremely low numbers. Ecology is to a great extent like that of Glareola pratincola.

Population trends: Critical condition with high probability of disappearance in the very near future.

Threats: Sharp transformation of habitats, irrigation and replacing of the steppe areas by grasslands, grazing, anthrpogenic pressure, high predation, pesticides.

Conservation measures taken: Urgent creation of reservoirs in the breeding areas.
