Taxonomic descriptions: D XII 16-17; A II 17-19; P 13-14; V I 4; Vertebrae 34-36 (Stojanov and all., 1963; Svetovidov, 1964). The body is elongated, laterally compressed, naked. Snout very short with vertical profile. Mouth is small. Colour: basically greenish, olive-brown; 5-6 vertical bars with blushing margins on body; 8-9 oblique bars on dorsal fn. Size: to 8 cm.

Distribution: Mediterranean, Black Sea and Atlantic coast of Morocco (Zander, 1986). In Bulgaria: along the entire coast.

Biology: Reproduction: April-July. Food: benthic invertebrate, algae.

Population trends: Declining.

Threats: Industrial pollution.
