Chart 2. Growth of GNP, Population, and GNP per Capita, 1980–1995
(with and without China & India)

In many developing countries, moderate GNP growth is counteracted by rapid population growth. As a result, between 1980 and 1995, the average annual GNP per capita growth rate for middle- and low-income countries (excluding China and India) was negative.
