In addition to the materials available to researchers in the Law Library of Congress, the Library of Congress's General Collection includes extensive materials documenting the efforts of individual States to conserve birds, other game, and fish by regulatory statutes, commissioners, and commissions; some of these efforts began in the seventeenth century, and the relatively early dates of many others confirm the degree to which certain state-level conservation measures tended to anticipate Federal initiatives. It should be noted that the list below includes only the General Collection's earliest state publications of their kind issued between 1850 and 1920, arranged by state in order of date of publication; readers who have direct access to the Library, or to other major research libraries, might also wish to look at materials reflecting subsequent modification of these provisions, or at earlier materials where they exist in other documents or in other library collections. They might also wish to consult some of the titles on three other Additional Resources lists, "Sportsmen and Conservationism, c.1850-1920", "Popular Ornithology, c.1850-1920", and "State-Level Conservation Initiatives Following the Governors' Conference of 1908;" as well as three helpful contemporary overviews published by the U.S.D.A.'s Division or Bureau of Biological Survey: Bulletin No. 12, Legislation for the protection of birds other than game birds, by T.S. Palmer (Washington, 1900, rev. ed. 1902; LC call number SK361.P21, rev. ed. SK361.P212 and also QL155.A2 no. 12a, LCCN for both eds. agr06-834), Bulletin No. 28, Game commissions and wardens: their appointment, powers, and duties, by R.W. Williams, Jr. (Washington, 1907; LC call number SK355.W72, LCCN agr07-1969), and Bulletin No. 41, Chronology and index of the more important events in American game protection, 1776-1911, by T.S. Palmer (Washington, 1912; LC call number QL155.A2 no. 41, LCCN agr12-478).
