Plant Science at Michigan State University
MSU has long been recognized for excellence and leadership in the plant
sciences. Graduate studies are offered through ten plant-science related
departments and programs spanning the full range from basic biochemistry
and molecular biology, to physiology, genetics, breeding, agricultural production,
ecology and evolutionary biology. The strength of individual programs is
enhanced by the breadth of complementary plant science expertise and opportunities
for interaction throughout campus. Prospective students may apply directly
to an individual program or to the Plant Sciences in general (see below).
Plant Science Fellowships providing opportunities to explore research in
a number of plant science-related laboratories are also available.

Funding Opportunities
Numerous funding opportunities are available for graduate students in
the Plant Sciences. Participating departments and graduate programs offer
various research and teaching assistantships. In addition, training grants
are often available. Finally, the University provides Plant Science Fellowships
that offer funding to outstanding students for their first two years of
study. These fellowships provide students with the opportunity for rotations
in any plant science laboratory on campus, regardless of department or program.
After the first year, the student selects a major professor and graduate
degree program. After the second year, funding is provided by the major
professor and department. Plant Science Fellows also will receive a $2000
professional enhancement stipend to facilitate travel to professional meetings.
